The 20 best video editing apps for 2021

Using a video editing app is critical to creating a successful video marketing strategy.

And by the time you’re reading this blog post, you probably already know that you should incorporate more video content into your marketing, especially after the advent of remote living.

However, as with most new strategies, you need to demonstrate ROI before receiving the budget. And that can be tricky because to make great video you need a few things – like a camera and editing software.

A high quality camera may already be built into your smartphone. However, a third-party mobile app is required to edit your raw material and prepare it for publication. You may even need access to the computer for the larger post-production projects.

There is a good chance that video editing software is already installed on your computer. For Windows this is Movie Maker and for Macs it is iMovie. Depending on the purpose of your video and the content channel you’re distributing it to, you may find that these options don’t have enough functionality.

The good news: there are several free and affordable video editing apps you can download that range from super simple to Hollywood-class powerful.

Editing apps for videos: standard functions

Each editing app is different, but there are some features you might want to look for. Since most apps have free and paid versions, it is important to know what is important and what could be worth upgrading.

Make sure you can do the following without paying for a premium version:

  • Either import videos and photos from your camera or film them through the app itself.
  • Scrub the video as you edit.
  • Add music to the video.
  • Choose an aspect ratio that suits your target platform (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).
  • Export videos that are at least 480p quality.
  • Save the video either on your camera roll or in the app’s cloud service.
  • At least add text and general shapes.
  • Speed up or slow down the video by 1-2 times.

Some of the premium features you may come across include:

  • Stickers, filters, gifs and unique fonts
  • Professional transitions between recordings
  • Premium music selection and high quality footage
  • High definition exports (720p, 1080p, or 4K)
  • Layering, mask and green screen recognition technologies
  • Multi-lane editing and timelines
  • Extreme acceleration and extreme deceleration of the footage (> 4X)
  • No trademark watermark

The solutions below can help you create video magic – whether your video is destined for Instagram, YouTube, or a similar channel where your audience is hungry for content. Click any of the links below to skip to a specific app type, or read on to learn more about all of them.

Video automation is here – in the form of the Magisto Video Editor.

With Magisto, owned by Vimeo, you can create incredible videos without ever leaving your smartphone in three easy steps: first choose your video editing style (the type of story you are telling), then the photos and video clips you will capture and finally you can choose your music from Magisto’s built-in music library.

Hyperlapse is an app made by Instagram that combines videos into short, quick videos that you can upload to Instagram or Facebook.

You can choose between different speeds and the app will show you how long the hyperlapsed video is for each speed compared to the length of the video in real time. (A real-time 40-second video turns into a 7-second video in Hyperlapse at 6x speed.) It’s a really cool way to capture something that usually takes a while – like a sunset or an event setup .

See in the video above what happened when I used Hyperlapse to film the break of day at 12X.

  • Easy way to speed up process videos
  • Minimal layout that is almost identical to the iPhone camera
  • You can record videos directly from the app
  • No registration is required to start

  • Has only one function: speed up videos
  • You cannot import videos that have already been filmed into the app
  • The video is saved in your camera roll and takes up space
  • No multitrack editing, 4K export, or other features normally associated with video editing apps

3. Wondershare Filmora

price: Starts for free on the phone | Platforms: iOS, Android, MacOS, Windows

Wondershare Filmora video editing applicationImage source

Wondershare Filmora (formerly Wondershare Video Editor) is the perfect option if you want to start out with basic video editing features and have the opportunity to evolve over time. The app is perfect for Instagram, but can create audience-ready videos for numerous platforms.

Filmora is available for Windows and Mac computers, while the company’s FilmoraGo mobile app is free to download for both iOS and Android devices.

Filmora’s “Easy Mode” reduces complexity so you can drag and drop video clips, add music, and create a finished video in minutes. The FilmoraGo app offers many of these features, as well as an effects store that lets you incorporate preset intros, themes, and transitions into your video creation.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, you are right: the free version of Wondershare Filmora will add a watermark to your videos that you can only remove by upgrading to the paid service.

  • A powerful option for beginners and advanced users alike
  • The desktop version offers multi-track editing and more traditional video editing functions
  • The mobile version includes easy-to-use effects, stickers and filters
  • You can overlay music and various sounds in the mobile app
  • Relatively affordable (starting at less than $ 50 a year for Filmora X and free for the mobile app) when compared to competitors like Adobe

  • The desktop apps are not free, but a trial version is available
  • Videos are branded with Wondershare unless you upgrade to a Premium plan

4. InShot

price: Starts for free | Platforms: iOS, Android

There are times when you just want to edit one video – no fancy collages and no splicing. That’s why there’s InShot, a handy app that lets you crop and speed up videos, or add music and filters. It’s pretty basic, but comes with great ease of use. You can also add a background if you’d like, although we think it’s pretty cool to overlap images like we did with the video above.

I recorded a simple video of a quiet beach scene, but enhanced it with InShot’s “warm filter” and added a suitable track – a song called “Pikake Stream” by Kalani. (I recommend watching the video entirely with headphones on, especially if you’re having a stressful day.)

  • Great app for beginners and marketers who don’t have a lot of time to do intensive video editing

  • Built-in music library with royalty-free options

  • You have the option to add voice overs and your own music

  • The app has a 4.8-star rating on the Apple Store and over 1 million reviews

  • No desktop app available

  • Filters and stickers are only available with a paid subscription

  • Your video will be watermarked unless you upgrade to the paid version

Top free video editing software

The following tools are the most versatile mobile apps of any free software listed in this article.

5. WeVideo

price: Starts for free | Platforms: iOS, Android, Chrome OS

WeVideo editing app for videos on Android

Cloud-based video editing software (i.e. software that you access through a browser instead of downloading it directly to your hard drive) is growing in popularity. One of the leading programs is WeVideo.

WeVideo definitely has some advanced features and functionality, including audio editing capabilities, a library of commercially licensed music, and the ability to share videos in 4K resolution. However, the free version of WeVideo is not without its limitations.

One major disadvantage is that you only get 10GB of cloud storage. If you’re creating a one-time video, that’s fine. However, if you want to edit multiple videos, you will definitely need more storage space. The free version also adds a WeVideo watermark to your videos, which isn’t ideal.

WeVideo is also available as a desktop computer product and comes with free and paid plans. For a full breakdown of the differences between these plans, see the WeVideo pricing page.

  • You can access your videos from any device
  • Paid versions are relatively inexpensive (starting at $ 4.99 for the power version)
  • 4K export available

  • The free version only has 10 GB of storage and 5 minutes of published video
  • The maximum resolution for the free subscription is 480p
  • WeVideo branding will be applied to your video unless you upgrade

6. Splicing

price: Free | Platforms: iOS

Splice, as the name suggests, allows you to join different video clips together on your phone to create a moving collage.

We had a lot of fun playing with it, especially since Splice even includes a library of music tracks that can be used as a backdrop for your finished product. You can also use the app to trim and edit the various video pieces and adjust the transition lengths from one scene to the next.

My colleague Amanda Zantal-Wiener experimented with Splice by putting together the above 15-second video of her dog – only with an iPhone 6.

  • Easy and intuitive to use

  • Familiar user-friendly interface

  • Multi-track and timeline editing with layers and masks

  • No registration needed

  • No watermark, even for free subscribers

  • Subscriptions start at $ 2.99 / week or $ 12.97 / month, which is more expensive than other alternatives

  • Effects and music are only available to paid subscribers

7. Adobe Premiere Rush

price: Free | Platforms: iOS, Android

Adobe Premiere Rush video editing app for Android and iOS

Adobe’s popular video editor, Premiere, is not only available on your mobile device, but it’s free too.’s Melissa Stoneburner calls this app a “gateway” to the full Adobe Premiere Pro desktop video editor, and we can see for ourselves. Similar to Magisto (the first video editor on our list), Adobe Rush automatically sets your video to the music of your choice (using the Premiere Rush library or your own) and offers a freeform editor that you can use to make your changes afterwards Can further customize initial audio sync.

With the equally robust video editing capabilities of Premiere Rush, you can crop, drag, and drop multiple video and picture clips – right from your mobile device’s photo and video album – in the order you want.

Then just add the right lighting, change the speed of the video and share your final product directly on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.

  • A natural choice for current Adobe users

  • Familiar video editing interface for experienced users and easier learning curve for beginners

  • The paid version supports 4K exports

8. PicPlayPost

price: Free | Platforms: iOS, Android

We’ve already covered the coolness of photo collages. But what if you could do a video collage? PicPlayPost is a simple app that lets you do just that. Remember that the audio from both videos will play at the same time. So make sure that they don’t conflict with each other.

There are many uses for a video collage app, but my colleague Lindsay Kolowich particularly likes the way fitness pro Melissa Made uses it on her Instagram account. She publishes video collages in which she is exercising on one side while explaining the training out loud on the other.

  • The most valuable functions are only available in the paid version

  • You can’t paste text from another app

  • Videos will be branded with PicPlayPost unless you upgrade

Best video editing apps for YouTube

The video editing services listed below, while not offering mobile versions, offer easy-to-learn features at a minimal cost. These apps are the best for sitting by your computer and editing amazing video content for your YouTube channel.

9. Mixer

price: Free | Platforms: Windows, MacOS, Linux

Blender desktop application for editing videos

The open source Blender program is more than just a video editor: it’s a comprehensive 3D animation suite that enables modeling, rendering, motion tracking, and more.

There are tons of features on the video editing side, including transitions, speed control, filters, adjustment layers, and more. There are also 32 slots for adding video clips, audio clips, pictures and effects, so you can create incredibly complex videos.

For the amateur video editor, all of the features available can be a bit overwhelming. However, if you want to produce really professional quality videos without having to deal with watermarks, Blender is a great option. Best of all, “You are free to use Blender for any purpose, including commercial or educational purposes,” it says on its website. For information about the fine print, see the license information.

  • Long history of use on multiple platforms

  • You can also render, model, shape, and animate with this app

10. Lightworks

price: Free | Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux

Lightworks video editor on Linux desktop

Like Blender, Lightworks is definitely on the more advanced (and powerful) end of the video editing software spectrum. In fact, it is a program that has been used to edit some well-known and award-winning films, including Pulp Fiction, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The King’s Speech.

At Lightworks you can choose between two different licenses: “Free” and “Pro”. (The latter, as you might have guessed, requires you to spit off some cash.) The main difference between the two licenses is that the Pro version has more features, including stereoscopic output and advanced project sharing. However, the free version is still quite powerful. It offers more than 100 effects and supports multicam editing.

  • Like Blender, Lightworks has a long history of use on multiple platforms

  • You can access license-free video and audio from the desktop app

  • You can export up to 4 KB

  • Multi-track editing and timelines, even in the free version

  • You can buy a lifetime license for $ 437.99 and don’t have to worry about renewing a subscription

  • Extremely steep learning curve for beginners

  • Not a lot of options for creating titles and subtitles

  • Users have reported formatting issues while importing video clips

11th shot

price: Free | Platforms: Windows, MacOS, Linux

Shotcut video editor in the timeline view

Shotcut is another open source video software – and it’s completely free. It is possible to create professional looking videos with Shotcut, but the interface is difficult to use. Perhaps that’s because it was originally developed for the Linux platform, which is very different from the typical Windows or Mac UX platform.

Thanks to the dedication and time it took in the shotcut for frequently asked questions and guides, this software allows you to create and export high quality videos – completely free.

  • Completely free – you never have to upgrade

  • Diverse list of features that compete with paid apps

  • It might be difficult to get the hang of it at first

  • Some users find the user interface difficult to navigate

  • Compared to other apps like Premiere Pro and FinalCut, less intuitive, even for experienced editors

12. VSDC Free Video Editor

price: Free | Platforms: Windows only

VSDC video editor in timeline view on a desktop

In skilled hands, VSDC Free Video Editor can produce some seriously professional looking videos. Not only does the program support almost all popular video formats, it also offers advanced video effects including object transformation and color correction, as well as advanced audio effects such as volume correction and sound normalization. And unlike WeVideo, VSDC Free Video Editor is really free. You can use the full range of functions of the program without having to deal with annoying watermarks.

Unfortunately there is a catch. If you want technical support, you have to pay. (And since there’s a bit of a learning curve, there’s a good chance you’ll need to.) VSDC free video editor support costs $ 9.99 for a month and $ 14.99 for a year.

  • The free version includes numerous premium features such as masking, blend modes, and 4K exports

  • You can share your video on YouTube, Vimeo, and other platforms right from the app

  • You have to pay for support when using the free version

  • Not as user friendly as other alternatives

  • Users have reported a steep learning curve

13. Machete Video Editor Lite

price: Free | Platforms: Windows only

Machete video editing software for Windows

At the easy end of the spectrum is Machete Video Editor Lite, a free program that allows you to cut, copy, and paste various sections of video. According to the Machete website, Video Editor Lite “is designed to” cut “your video files quickly and easily.

Thanks to the program’s intuitive interface, you won’t have to waste time searching through technical support documents. And since Video Editor Lite doesn’t re-encode your video files when you cut, you don’t have to worry about video quality loss.

The main drawbacks of the program? It only supports AVI and WMV video formats and does not allow audio editing. However, if you are new to video editing and just need to make simple changes, this is a great option.

  • You can only export AVI and WMV files

  • You cannot edit or replace the audio

  • Outdated website with limited support documents

14. Avidemux

price: Free | Platforms: Windows, MacOS, Linux

Avidemux video editing software for YouTube and animated videos

As with Machete Video Editor Lite, Avidemux lets you do basic video editing (not audio editing) without worrying about the loss of video quality. But Avidemux still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

For starters, the program supports multiple video formats including AVI, DVD, MPEG, QuickTime, and MP4. In addition, Avidemux has several filters that allow you to perform a variety of different functions, from flipping and rotating clips, to adding subtitles, to adjusting colors and brightness levels.

And while the learning curve for Avidemux is a bit steeper compared to Machete Video Editor Lite, there is an extensive Avidemux wiki that covers everything you need to know.

  • Supports multiple file formats like AVI, MPEG, MP4 and Microsoft’s proprietary ASF

  • Simple interface best for tasks like cutting and splicing footage

  • Easy learning curve; just download and use

15. HitFilm

price: Starts for free | Platforms: Windows, MacOS

HitFilm video editing software in timeline view

HitFilm Express is free video editing and visual effects software. With this software, you can add 180+ special effects to your videos, including 3D editing.

Possibly the coolest HitFilm feature is the abundance of tutorial videos – users can practice applying special visual effects in movie tutorials based on Star Wars, Westworld, and more.

Obviously, upgrading to HitFilm Pro allows access to more visual effects, better resolution and 3D rendering, and better audio synchronization between audio and video files. It costs $ 300, but if you’re not ready to invest fully, HitFilm Express users can purchase cheaper extensions to use more tools in their software.

For the full list of the differences between HitFilm Free and Pro, see the Compare Versions page.
