How to create a resume in Word

  1. Open Microsoft Word on your computer.
  2. From the template menu, select either “Simple Resume” or “Bold Resume”.
  3. Enter your name and contact information above.
  4. Write a brief summary of your experiences and goals.
  5. Enter your school and latest education.
  6. Use the lines shown in the template to describe each job you performed.
  7. List all relevant skills.
  8. Describe all relevant awards and achievements.

1. Open Microsoft Word on your computer.

When you have Microsoft Word installed on your computer, open the program and let it load for a moment. There are some helpful options waiting for you on the first screen, especially for resume creation.

2. Select either “Basic Resume” or “Bold Resume” from the template menu.

As soon as you have started MS Word, a window with templates will appear. Scroll down until you see the template options dedicated to resumes. There are at least two of them. Double click the one that fits your style and personal brand, but don’t pay too much attention to the design just yet. You can customize these templates pretty much.

3. Enter your name and contact information above.

When your resume template opens, you will see placeholder text for each line of your resume, starting with your first and last name at the top. Delete this header text and enter your name and any contact information you want the recruiter to use to contact you.

4. Make a brief summary of your experiences and goals.

Use the first line under your name and contact information to describe who you are, what you do, and what to look for in your career.

5. Enter your school and the latest education.

List any relevant degrees or certificates that you have received through the school. You can safely exclude secondary education if you graduate from an accredited college.

6. Use the lines shown in the template to describe each job you performed.

Your work experience is often the most important section of your resume. So you can put this section above your skills and education, depending on how many jobs you’ve done before.

7. List all relevant skills.

If you have experience with certain software, exercise, problem solving, or management techniques, use them to develop your skills. The Skills section of your resume will tell you what all of your previous jobs or related experiences have in common based on what they taught you and what you provided them with.

8. Describe all relevant awards and achievements.

End your resume with personal accomplishments or awards that a hiring manager in your industry will appreciate. For example, while this section shouldn’t include highly improved recognition from a minor league, it should definitely include your Marketer of the Month award from your most recent position.

Free resume templates to download in Word

Obviously, if you are already employed full-time it is difficult to find the time to apply for a new position, let alone update your resume to reflect your qualifications.
